ClimACTic!
PROJECT
Community provocation taking action on climate change
ClimACTic! is an exciting project created from a community provocation from Australian Parents for Climate Action (AP4CA). Endeavouring to empower people around the idea of climate change and the urgent ways we need to address the climate crisis. The game is a fun and educational way for families and children to start important inter-generational conversations, sparking meaningful actions in their lives and homes.
Given that climate change has the potential to be a foreboding topic, particularly for younger audiences, the game presents the topic in a less confronting manner and encourages players to make simple, environmentally-friendly behavioural changes that help mitigate the issue. The gamification of a complicated topic such as climate change could be so easily lost in intricate science and economics - but this presented the opportunity to co-design a simple and engaging way to do this for kids and importantly, adults. An additional online resource was built into the game's Action Cards to involve and educate adults about the global and personal benefits of climate action - for example the disruption of trade, reducing power bills through renewable resources, how to start a worm farm and more. Developing mechanics and visual design with a team of four lead to the creation of a high fidelity prototype and presentation at the Nex(us) Exhibition.
Team management was an endearing factor in the success and delivery of the product. Creating original concept and design from scratch with strong elements of co-design with the community. Team coordination and planning ensured the fluid transition through design stages and towards the production of the board game. Overall validation, commendations and high public interest (from families, business and potential investors) followed from the exhibition and beyond for the uniqueness and thoughtful nature of ClimACTic!.
The success and potential of this unique product for Australian families was achieved though various design techniques and tools to involve parents, experts and of course children. It was important to facilitate the co-design process within the team and AP4CA members in an effective and fun way to gain the most of their time and deliver valuable outcomes.
